Howard Ross

 

Howard M. Ross, 69, of Cromwell, CT, surrounded by the love of his family, entered into his heavenly rest on December 22, 2024, after a courageous year-long battle with ALS. Howard was a devoted husband to Jaqueline Lewis-Ross and the cornerstone of his family. A man whose unwavering dedication and love left an indelible mark on all who knew him. Howard leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and unmatched talent.

Born in Kingston, Jamaica, on November 13, 1955, Howard was the middle child born to Daisy Ross and the late John Ross. Howard moved to the United States at the age of 14, settling in New Haven, Connecticut. A graduate of Lee High School, he went on to become a licensed electrician, a trade he practiced with precision and pride.

More than 30 years ago Howard blended his family with love, embracing his role as a great leader, provider, and protector. He was a devoted and loving father, cherishing his role as a parent and ensuring that his family always felt his unwavering support and care. He was the glue that held his family together. Howard was a man of action, a true “busybody” whose energy seemed endless. Sitting still wasn’t in Howard’s nature unless he was asleep.

Known as a true "jack of all trades," Howard's skills knew no bounds. From fixing cars to building homes, decks, plumbing, you name it, Howard could tackle any challenge with ingenuity and determination. But Howard's talents extended well beyond his craftsmanship. He cultivated one of the most impressive gardens (including his famous habanero peppers that he pickled and handed out to whomever was brave enough), cooked delicious Jamaican cuisine, could handle a needle and thread and even style his daughters hair if needed. Howard truly could do it all, and he did it with love and excellence. Oh, and with a toothpick in his mouth.

When he did take a break from work, Howard enjoyed fishing, hitting golf balls in the backyard, and cheering on his grandsons at their sporting events. He was an avid sports fan, with football and basketball being his favorite, watching every game he could, when he could.   He was a devoted family man, finding his greatest joy in spending time with loved ones. His big, bright smile and unmistakable laugh could light up any room and be heard from afar.

Howard’s legacy of dedication, humor, and boundless generosity will be cherished forever by his wife, Jacqueline Lewis-Ross, his children, Belinda Ross of New Bern, NC, Aisha Ross of Macon, GA, Eboni (Victor) Payne of Cromwell, Steven Ray of Rocky Hill, Dwayne Lewis of Cromwell; grandchildren, Mychelle and Jaida Stancil of Meriden, Amari Robinson of New Bern, NC, Victor, Vaughn, and Sydni Payne of Cromwell, his beloved mother; Daisy Ross of New Haven; his sister Janet (Newton) Dixon of FL, Sister-in-law Diane Ross of New Haven; special nephew, Newton Dixon of New York, along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, and the many friends who loved him dearly. Howard was predeceased by his father John Ross and brother Ricardo Ross.

Howard will be remembered as a man who gave his all, loved deeply, and brought joy to everyone he met. May his soul rest in eternal peace.

A celebration of Howard’s extraordinary life will be held on January 7, 2025 at 11:00 am, at Zion First Baptist Church, 16 James A. Moses Ave, Middletown, CT 06416.
