Election 2020 Request
Dear Local 90 Members and Retirees,
IBEW Brothers and Sisters have come together many times over the years to fight for and defend our rights. Thanks to our unity, we have won improved wages and working conditions and gained the respect that all working people deserve. However, there are politicians who would rather see us divided and our union weak so that we can’t fight for what we have earned, both at the bargaining table and in Washington, D.C.
This November, we have the opportunity to elect a president who will fight with us and restore a country ravaged by an ongoing pandemic and economic devastation. Joe Biden served as vice president for Barack Obama, helping take the United States from the depths of a recession and job loss to a historic streak of prosperity and economic growth. Once again, Joe Biden has a plan to get the country on the right track, to create tens of thousands of new jobs by rebuilding our electricity grid, roads, rail lines and other transportation networks. He plans to increase broadband capacity and invest in advanced nuclear technologies, battery storage and carbon capture and sequestration, all while strictly enforcing prevailing wage laws, workplace protections and supporting the right of workers to organize and bargain collectively. Biden also has a detailed plan, with significant input from the IBEW and organized labor, to invest in America’s ingenuity and reinvigorate our manufacturing sector. He recognizes that given the chance, it is working families who will once again build America back stronger than ever before.
The cornerstone of Joe Biden’s Build Back Better plan is a historic $2 trillion first-term commitment to 500,000 new electric vehicle charging stations and upgrading 4 million commercial buildings and 2 million homes over four years. President Trump, on the other hand, is touting his reelection endorsement by the Associated Builders and Contractors, who commend him for his opposition to pro-labor legislation, saying in a letter to him, “Your promise to veto the PRO Act ... assures us that you will protect the merit shop industry and small businesses...”
How you vote is a personal decision, but the IBEW has carefully reviewed both candidates’ records, and decided to endorse Joe Biden in February. Joe Biden is a man of decency and good character who knows the challenges faced by working families. He listens to, and is shaped by, the counsel of others, like IBEW International President Lonnie R. Stephenson, who serves as an advisor to his campaign on energy issues.
During Donald Trump’s administration, even before the catastrophic loss of the coronavirus pandemic, the United States saw 300,000 jobs outsourced with the help of Donald Trump’s tax policy, which made it easier for corporations to move to China. As a result, the trade deficit is over 12 percent higher than when Trump entered the White House. Joe Biden and Kamala Harris know that America can do better.
If you have not done so yet, please check your registration status and request a mail-in ballot at www.ibewvotes2020.org. Help your families and friends to do so as well. The consequences of this election are stark. Your vote for Joe Biden is a vote for brotherhood, unity, recovery, and optimism for the future.
In Solidarity,
Sean Daly, Business Manager
